i thought
there could never be
a more shattering sound
unleashed
than the sound
of that sobbing scream
after learning
there was no remedy, no cure
no bargaining that would keep you here
after learning
the greatest kindness
would be to let you go

then the day i came home and
instead of the panting
the pitter patter prancing
the tornado tail
and whimpers demanding
i was greeted by a grave
soul-crushing quiet

and i knew
there would never be
a more shattering sound
unleashed
than the sound
of that–
